Residents in the southeast Bahamas have been involved in the harvesting of cascarilla bark for over 100 years. The Acklins Islanders Coop with a current membership of over three hundred was formed to bring together many harvesters to produce quality products based on the cascarilla bark. Due to the climate and topography, it is said that the cascarilla bark grown in the Bahamas produces one of the most potent essential oils of its kind in the world.
Cascarilla plants are already growing on the 100-acre farm. The Cooperative plans to plant an additional 80,000 plants to
populate the entire farm. The growers and harvesters are very knowledgeable in the overall process in growing and harvesting the bark. This includes planting the trees, knowing the right conidiations for harvesting. The harvesters will be responsible for sustainably propagating the cascarilla plant. These participants process cascarilla bark based on international specifications to fulfil pre-order purchases in the global market, while adhering to the signed procurement agreement by local and international companies.
Our mission is not only to produce quality products from cascarilla to serve the world, but also to provide employment to the islanders. To bring industrial development to the southeast Bahamas, and to create generational wealth to all families living in the region.
The Cascarilla Essential Oil is used in the pharmaceutical industry, the perfume industry, food industry and the liqueurs and non-alcoholic beverages industry
Cascarilla bark were discovered to have it healing aspect as well. It is used in the treatment of some illness such as fevers, malaria, dysentery, and dyspepsia.
Cascarilla is used as a flavor ingredient in many categories of food products, including frozen dairy desserts, candy, baked goods, and condiments and relishes
Essential oil as a fragrance component in soaps, detergents, creams, lotions, and perfumes. The oil is used by compounders, especially for men's fragrances, because of its power and tenacity.
Cascarilla tinctures and extracts are used in certain bitter tonic preparations; liqueurs and non-alcoholic beverages. The Vermouth industry used it cause of its unique scent and flavor.
